Education Loan Abroad: Moratorium and EMI

A practical decision guide for Indian students and families.

Sanction is not cash in your account

Start with the lender’s written offer. Record the sanctioned limit, conditions before release, who receives each disbursement and whether the loan covers tuition, living costs or both. A conditional approval cannot be treated as money available on every visa or deposit deadline. Ask the lender to resolve this timing gap in writing.

Compare security and total obligations

For collateral and unsecured offers, compare the same fields: interest basis, reset rules, processing charges, co-borrower obligations, insurance, repayment term and early-payment conditions. A lower advertised rate may not describe the final offer. Use the signed lender schedule; this guide does not prescribe a rate or tax treatment.

Visa evidence is a separate acceptance test

Read the chosen immigration authority’s financial-evidence requirements alongside the loan letter. Check the lender, document wording, availability and disbursement conditions accepted for that route. GOV.UK’s Student money page is one example of a route-specific check, not a rule for every destination. Do not commit one loan to incompatible country plans.

Moratorium does not settle the interest question

Ask for two repayment schedules: interest paid during study and interest left unpaid. Compare the balance when EMI starts and total payments, not just the first instalment. The Knowledge Hub calculator uses an illustrative simple-interest assumption during the holiday and a fully disbursed loan; actual staged disbursement or compounding can differ.

Stress-test repayment before choosing a course

Make three household budgets: a graduate job on time, a delayed job and a return to India. Put rent, tax, essential expenses and other debts ahead of any amount available for EMI. For Bachelor’s study include the whole course; for Master’s include the transition to work; for PhD separate guaranteed funding from renewal-dependent funding.

Your loan decision checklist

Keep a one-page record with columns for item, lender answer, dated document and unresolved issue. Include release date, first EMI, interest treatment, total charges, refund routing and the fallback payer. Do not tick “funded” until the timetable works. Use the Hub’s EMI tool for scenarios, then reconcile it with the lender’s own schedule.

Official references and verification limits

Official route references checked on 17 October 2026. This decision guide does not set visa thresholds, work-hour limits or family entitlements. Read the applicable official checklist before applying.

Before applying, confirm the exact category, filing location, effective date, funds, work, post-study and family conditions with the responsible authority. Unresolved requirements must be checked before payment.
