Start with the school’s actual offer
Confirm the programme, campus, start date and school contact. Ask which academic and financial conditions remain before the school issues the appropriate immigration document. A marketing email is not a final admission or funding award. Keep the official offer and any scholarship or assistantship terms in your own records.
Reconcile the I-20 funding picture
Use the school’s cost estimate as the starting reference, then identify what is covered by personal funds, family support and confirmed institutional funding. For each source record the holder, amount, availability and evidence. Ask the school to correct any document discrepancy. Do not manufacture a temporary balance to tell a different story from your real finances.
Follow the official application sequence
The Department of State student-visa instructions describe the school document, SEVIS and visa application steps. Follow the designated application and appointment links from that source. Keep the DS-160 confirmation and payment references. Verify identity, education and previous-application answers yourself even when someone helps with typing.
Prepare facts, not a performance
Practise explaining why this course fits your background, how it will be paid for and what you actually plan to study. Use your own words and documents. Do not memorise invented family income, job promises or research interests. If you do not understand an item in the file, resolve it before attending an interview.
Bachelor, Master and PhD need different budgets
For Bachelor’s study, model the full multi-year commitment and scholarship renewal. For a Master’s, include the transition after course completion without assuming employment. For PhD, separate tuition remission, stipend, assistantship duties and funding duration. Ask the institution to identify the appropriate student or exchange/research category; a funding label alone is not a visa classification.
Final consistency checklist
Compare the offer, school document, DS-160, funding evidence and appointment confirmation. Check identity, dates, programme and money sources. Save corrections and final versions. Employment during or after study needs its own status-specific verification; do not treat CPT, OPT or a degree label as automatic permission or a job guarantee.
Official references and verification limits
Official route references checked on 17 October 2026. This decision guide does not set visa thresholds, work-hour limits or family entitlements. Read the applicable official checklist before applying.
Before applying, confirm the exact category, filing location, effective date, funds, work, post-study and family conditions with the responsible authority. Unresolved requirements must be checked before payment.
