Student Visa Financial Proof

Detailed independent guidance for Indian students and families.

Understand why tuition invoices, bank balances, education loans and source-of-funds evidence are not interchangeable.

Three amounts that should not be mixed up

Cost to pay is an invoice or future expense, such as tuition or insurance. Funds to prove are amounts and evidence required under the specific immigration route. Funds genuinely usable are money accessible when a payment is due, after deposits and commitments already made. These can be different figures.

Example: the same savings cannot fund two commitments

A family has ₹8 lakh in savings. It has already committed ₹2 lakh as a deposit for one destination. Assuming no refund or access to that deposit during the backup decision, ₹6 lakh remains available for the next payment. This arithmetic is an illustrative liquidity test, *not* a visa-rule formula. Whether a deposit may count as financial proof depends on the destination's actual rules.

Rules are country-specific

  • UK: GOV.UK defines course fees and maintenance separately; for many applicants it specifies a 28-day holding rule and conditions for loan/sponsorship evidence.
  • Canada: IRCC requires evidence for tuition, living expenses and transportation without relying on employment, and assesses source and availability.
  • Germany: Whether a particular financial evidence method is accepted must be checked against the specific German mission and applicable residence route. Do not assume a loan sanction or sponsor letter substitutes automatically.

Financial proof is not a bank statement alone

Ask: whose money is it, where did it come from, can the student legally use it, does the amount cover required costs, and is it still available after already committed payments? Sudden credits should have a truthful documented explanation.

Before any transfer

Check university payment deadlines, visa proof timing, lender disbursement conditions, foreign exchange margins and refund terms. Maintain a separate backup-country budget so that the same balance is not counted twice.
