German Missions in India directs study applications through the Consular Services Portal. Choose the mission for your place of residence. Researcher categories can follow a different procedure.
Bachelor decisions
Ask the institution to assess your exact Class 12 qualification and whether preparatory study is needed. Do not buy a language-plus-degree package before academic eligibility is confirmed.
Master decisions
Compare your transcript with subject-credit prerequisites. A similar degree title does not establish that a specialised Master’s accepts your modules.
Phd decisions
Take the funding contract to the host international office and ask which residence category fits. Do not assume every doctoral applicant follows the Bachelor/Master checklist.

Application and arrival checkpoints
Read the mission’s current study checklist; confirm admission and any preparatory conditions; collect applicable verification and funding documents; use the required consular process; attend the instructed appointment; follow local registration and residence instructions after arrival.
India-based applicants: use the authority’s current location/jurisdiction instructions for your actual residence. Do not assume every Indian applicant uses the same appointment centre.
Five money questions to keep separate
- Tuition payable
- Use the institution invoice: amount due, payee, deadline and what it covers.
- Proof of funds
- Use the applicable authority’s current evidence rules. A spending budget and an acceptable document are different checks.
- Deposits locked
- Record refund conditions and the earliest realistic return date. Do not count locked money twice.
- Loan availability
- Ask the lender which conditions remain before release and whether the required letter can be issued.
- Living costs after arrival
- Price actual housing, insurance, transport and a buffer without assuming you will find a job.
A practical risk worth resolving
Low tuition does not remove living-cost and liquidity risk. Ask when any blocked funds become usable and budget for the period before access.
Work, post-study plans and family
Work, graduate-route and family conditions depend on your permit category and application date. Check the responsible authority before making plans. Work permission is not a job promise; do not fund compulsory costs with uncertain future earnings.
