Three decisions, three evidence folders
Separate university eligibility, academic-document verification and immigration. A positive result in one folder does not complete the others. Put the institution’s programme page in the first folder, the applicable APS instructions in the second and the current mission checklist in the third. Record unresolved questions before paying a service provider.
Resolve Class 12, Master’s and research entry separately
After Class 12, ask whether direct entry or preparatory study fits your exact qualification. For a Master’s, compare required subject credits with your transcript. For doctoral research, show the host your admission and funding or employment agreement. Obtain an institutional answer instead of assuming one Indian qualification is treated identically everywhere.
Check APS applicability without generalising
Do not turn “APS” into a universal instruction for every researcher. Use the current official checklist and the APS authority’s own instructions to identify your case. Record the applicable requirement or exception and its source. If the category is unclear, obtain clarification before booking verification or a visa appointment.
Build the actual consular file
German Missions in India lists study purposes in its Consular Services Portal process and directs applicants to the mission responsible for their residence. Use the current study checklist linked there. Researcher/guest-scientist cases are separately listed, so ask the host to confirm the intended category. Do not substitute a consultant’s generic folder for the official request.
Keep fees, blocked funds and spending money apart
Request a full programme invoice and a realistic city budget. If your route uses a blocked account, understand the opening, refund and access conditions before transfer. Money already locked or spent cannot also be your arrival buffer. Compare public and private programmes by actual total cost and recognition, not by a blanket “free education” label.
Use a discrepancy checklist
Compare name spelling, institution, programme, intake, qualification, payment records and funding documents across every submission. Mark each item “matches”, “correction requested” or “pending”. Keep copies of the final documents and submission receipts. After a decision, read the arrival registration and residence instructions; do not assume the entry visa covers the whole course.
Official references and verification limits
Official route references checked on 17 October 2026. This decision guide does not set visa thresholds, work-hour limits or family entitlements. Read the applicable official checklist before applying.
Before applying, confirm the exact category, filing location, effective date, funds, work, post-study and family conditions with the responsible authority. Unresolved requirements must be checked before payment.
