Research fit comes before a country shortlist
Identify a research question, methods you can use and evidence of your preparation. Read the group’s recent work before contacting a supervisor. Some opportunities are advertised projects; others require an applicant-led proposal. Follow the programme’s actual instructions rather than sending the same generic proposal to many departments.
Define what “funded” covers
Ask for separate figures and dates for tuition remission, stipend or salary, research costs, insurance and relocation. Record who pays, when payment starts and what renewal depends on. A supervisor’s encouraging email is not a funding contract. A fee waiver can still leave living expenses unfunded.
Employment and scholarship have different documents
Read employment duties, working time, leave, contract length and termination conditions if the offer is salaried. For a scholarship, read award duration and continuation requirements. Ask the host which insurance and tax questions require individual advice. Do not label a stipend as take-home salary or assume benefits that the award does not promise.
Use the correct immigration classification
Migri explicitly distinguishes scientific research from taught study, and German Missions lists a separate researcher category. Other destinations also need a case-specific assessment. Give the host the actual admission, grant and employment documents and ask for the applicable route. Do not copy undergraduate APS, work or family assumptions into every doctoral case.
Check entry and personal sustainability
A Bachelor’s or Master’s qualification should be evaluated by the actual doctoral programme; direct entry is not universal. Discuss supervision frequency, facilities, publication expectations and support if the project changes. Budget the period before funding arrives and any gap after the contract ends. Family plans need separate official permission and cost checks.
Use a doctoral offer audit
Create columns for academic admission, supervisor, funding instrument, monthly payment basis, guaranteed duration, renewal condition, duties and immigration category. Attach the dated evidence to every completed row. Mark unknowns clearly and request answers from the graduate school or HR as appropriate. Accepting an offer should follow this audit, not replace it.
